"Into the Woods"– an exhibition of paintings and drawings: North Wall Arts Centre, Oxford, 16-28 June 2011
My work ranges from small ink and gouache drawings to large oil and acrylic paintings on canvas. My subjects include still life and landscape, and sometimes hover between the two, through ‘constructed’ landscapes such as my toy drawings.
Sometimes the ‘subject’ is simply a vehicle for exploration of colour and technique, or for playing with materials and process; the relationship between painting
and drawing; or representation and abstraction.
My landscape paintings are often created out of an emotional response to something in the landscape: it may be something sinister or ominous, or something
beautiful or intruiging. Signs, found objects and inscriptions can play a part in this; as can the colours, patterns or quality of light.
I have been looking, particularly, at protected and managed spaces – from National Parks and reserves to sanitised urban landscapes.
From a painterly aspect, my aims are:
• a continued awareness of mark-making, to broaden my mark-making vocabulary
• experimenting with colour and composition as emotive and psychological tools
• sound painterly technique
